In 1981 the u3a movement was born (then known as the University of the Third Age). By the end of 2016 there were 1000 u3as and today there are more than 400,000 members in the UK. The idea was to create a movement which offers members opportunities to learn for pleasure and also pass on their skills to others.
The u3a movement is non-religious and non-political. It is open to all people who are no longer in full time work. Each u3a is self-funded through its membership.
Each operates independently but is also a member of the Third Age Trust (TAT) – the u3a UK umbrella body which provides support, resources and information to members (see u3a.org.uk)
How does it work?
Members form groups that cover topics ranging from allotment gardening and Mah-Jong to photography and wine appreciation. Learning and discovering new things is the key – and enjoyment is the prime motive! There is no distinction between group members and group leaders. All are u3a members. Each u3a has its own committee (all volunteers). No payments are made to any members for services rendered.
Isle of Wight u3a
Once you join you will have endless opportunities to join groups, lead groups, make new friends and have fun. Apart from dozens of interest groups to choose from, there are monthly meetings when entertaining and engaging speakers talk on a variety of subjects.
There are also monthly coffee mornings held across the Island and one-off special events organised by members (beach walks, table tennis and indoor bowls, eating out, theatre trips, picnics, theatre outings, moonlight swims!)
Small interest groups are the life blood of the u3a. Run by members for members, groups meet in people’s homes or suitable venues across the Island (pubs, village halls, maybe on Zoom).
Group leaders are generally not experts but enthusiasts - although in some groups such as languages, some knowledge is helpful.
If you have an interest that is not represented, we’d love to hear from you. Contact a member of the committee or come to a coffee morning and we will help you set up a group.
You will receive a copy of our monthly diary plus a newsletter every other month which gives more detailed information about what’s on offer.
WHATEVER MEMBERS WANT, THEY MAKE HAPPEN!!
There is also a short video on Youtube which will give you more insights into the u3a and its membership.
All members can choose to get a copy of the u3a Magazine u3aMatters 5 times each year.
