“If only you would believe in yourself just think what you could be or where you could go in the world.”

This was the audition line for the school play, to be performed by the top class at the end of the summer term. It was a children’s modern version of Cinderella written by themselves.

Bryony fancied being the Fairy Godmother. She had practised, before the mirror in her bedroom, not only the words but also the grand gestures arm movements and hadn’t given any other role consideration. She believed in herself.

She was not chosen as Fairy Godmother but was down for the role of the back end of the pony to draw a sledge across the stage and out onto the school playing field.

There were tears at home as she expressed her disappointment.

Mum chipped in, “Fairy Godmothers tend to have big pockets and right connections and you are not there yet. May be, one day, you will be a proper Fairy Godmother which is better than being a pretend one. In the meantime you can make the most impressive rear end of a pony if you work at it. After tea, when dad comes home, I think he would help you understand the part. After all the saying goes that there are no small parts in acting only small minded actors and you, are not going to be one of those, now, are you? “
